10 Easy Karate Drills Kids Can Do at Home

Uncategorized Oct 21, 2026

You don't need a dojo, a mat, or any equipment to start building karate skills. These 10 simple drills fit in a living room and take about 10 to 15 minutes. They're great for beginners and a fun way to burn energy on a rainy day.

Safety first: clear a space about the size of a yoga mat, move anything breakable, and practice barefoot or in grippy socks. Always supervise young children.

1. Ready stance hold

Feet shoulder-width apart, fists in front of the belt, eyes forward. Hold perfectly still for 20 seconds. It sounds easy, but it builds focus and self-control.

2. Horse stance

Feet wide, toes forward, knees bent like sitting on a horse. Start with 15 seconds and add 5 seconds each week. Great for leg strength.

3. Counting punches in Japanese

From horse stance, punch straight forward, alternating hands, while counting to 10 in Japanese: ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roku, shichi, hachi, ku, ju. Kids love learning the words.

4. High and low blocks

Practice a rising block (arm sweeps up to protect the head) and a down block (arm sweeps down past the knee). Do 5 of each side, slowly at first.

5. Front kicks

Lift the knee high, snap the foot forward, pull it back, and set it down. Do 5 on each leg. Focus on balance before speed.

6. Crane balance

Stand on one leg with the other knee lifted and arms out. Hold for 10 seconds, then switch. Balance is the secret to strong kicks.

7. Kiai practice

A kiai is the strong shout karate students make with a technique. Have your child punch and shout "kiai!" from the belly. It's especially good for shy kids.

8. Shadow combinations

Put moves together: block, punch, kick. Call out a combo and have your child perform it. Make it a game by speeding up over time.

9. Karate conditioning

10 jumping jacks, 5 squats, and 5 push-ups (knee push-ups are fine). Repeat twice. Strong bodies make strong technique.

10. Bow and reflect

End every session with a bow and one question: "What did you do best today?" This builds the respect and confidence karate is known for.

Make it a habit

Short and consistent beats long and rare. Try these drills at the same time each day and track progress on a calendar. Kids love seeing a streak grow.
