How Online Karate Belt Testing Works: A Guide for Parents

Belts are a big part of what makes karate so motivating for kids. Each new color is a goal, a celebration, and proof that practice pays off. But how does belt testing work when your child is learning online? Here's exactly what to expect.
Why belt testing matters
- It gives kids a clear goal. "Learn these moves and you'll earn your yellow belt" is far more motivating than "keep practicing."
- It builds confidence. Preparing for a test and passing it teaches kids they can do hard things.
- It keeps standards real. A belt should mean your child actually knows the material.
How online belt testing works, step by step
- Learn the requirements. Each belt has a set list of techniques: stances, blocks, punches, kicks, and often a kata (a set pattern of moves).
- Practice until it feels natural. Your child replays the lessons as often as needed. There's no rush.
- Record the test at home. When your child is ready, you film them performing the required techniques. A phone propped up against a wall works fine.
- Get personal feedback. In our program, Sensei David reviews every test himself and sends feedback on what looks great and what to polish.
- Earn the next rank. Once the test meets the standard, your child earns their new rank and certificate.
Tips for recording a great test video
- Film in a bright room with the light in front of your child, not behind.
- Hold the phone sideways (landscape) so the whole body fits in the frame.
- Clear the space so your child can move without bumping furniture.
- Do a practice run first. Nerves are normal, even at home.
- Have your child wear their uniform if they have one. It makes the moment feel special.
What if my child doesn't pass?
That's part of learning, and it's okay. Your child gets clear feedback on exactly what to work on, practices those pieces, and tries again. Learning to keep going after a setback is one of the most valuable lessons karate teaches.
How long does each belt take?
It depends on your child's age, how often they practice, and the belt level. Early belts usually come faster, which keeps young beginners excited. Higher belts take longer because the techniques get more advanced. Consistent short practice, even 10 minutes a day, makes the biggest difference.
